Stopcock clockwise until it stops. Kitchen cupboard first, cellar head second — a lot of houses round here hide it down there. If it’s stiff, stop turning. Old brass snaps.
One thing leaking? The pipe feeding it usually has a small valve with a screw slot. A quarter turn stops that item and leaves the rest of the house running.
Water runs downhill and sideways. Move what matters, bucket under the drip, and kill any circuit it’s heading towards.

If water is escaping and you cannot stop it, ring now. If it’s isolated and nothing is being damaged, morning is fine and usually cheaper. No heating in freezing weather with young children or an elderly relative in the house counts as now. Ring either way and we’ll say honestly which it is.

Stop. Old brass snaps, and a snapped stopcock turns a leak into a flood you cannot control at all. Ring and tell us it’s seized — it changes how quickly we need to get to you and what we bring.
